The Detroit Lions are expected to win.
That is not the controversial part of this matchup.
The more important betting question is whether Detroit is being asked to win by too many points.
The latest market has Detroit between -6.5 and -7, with the total sitting around 49.5 to 50 points.
That half-point matters.
For bettors who like New Orleans, +7 is the number worth shopping for.

Why Detroit Still Deserves Respect
The Lions are playing at Ford Field and have a significant amount of offensive firepower.
Jared Goff leads the offense, with Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams providing Detroit with multiple ways to attack.
The defense also has a major difference-maker in Aidan Hutchinson.
That combination makes Detroit capable of creating the type of game script that ruins an underdog ticket: early lead, opponent forced into obvious passing situations, pass rush becomes more aggressive and the margin grows late.
That is the primary concern for Saints backers.
But New Orleans Doesn’t Need to Win
This is where the handicap becomes more interesting.
New Orleans does not need to prove it is the better football team.
It needs to stay within a touchdown.
Tyler Shough enters the season as the Saints’ quarterback, while Chris Olave gives him a proven receiving weapon. New Orleans also added Travis Etienne Jr. to its offensive mix.
There are legitimate questions surrounding the Saints, but those questions are already part of why the market is offering such a large number.
Injury News Creates Another Layer
The Saints are entering the opener with some important availability questions.
FanDuel currently lists Cameron Jordan as out with a hamstring injury and Alvin Kamara as questionable with a knee/MCL issue.
Detroit has concerns of its own.
Christian Izien and Mekhi Wingo are listed as questionable, while the Lions have also been managing several roster-health issues during the week. Thursday’s practice report showed all Detroit players participating, although three were limited.
These situations should be checked again before kickoff.
That is particularly important for a Week 1 game because preseason assumptions can quickly become outdated once final inactive lists are released.
The Hidden Betting Edge: Protect the Key Number
This is the angle I want bettors to remember.
You don’t have to decide whether New Orleans is a good team.
You don’t even have to decide whether New Orleans is better than Detroit.
You simply need to decide whether the Saints can keep the game inside one score.
If the final score is:
Detroit 27, New Orleans 20
the Saints +7 ticket wins.
If it is:
Detroit 28, New Orleans 21
the Saints +7 ticket pushes.
At +6.5, that exact touchdown margin becomes a loss.
That is why the price and number should be treated as part of the bet itself.
What Could Go Wrong?
The biggest concern is the Lions’ ability to create explosive plays.
If Gibbs gets into space and Detroit’s passing game consistently creates chunk yardage, New Orleans could fall behind quickly.
The Saints’ offensive uncertainty is another problem.
If Shough struggles under pressure, New Orleans could have trouble sustaining drives and giving its defense enough rest.
That is exactly how a +7 underdog becomes a 10- or 14-point loser.
Live Betting Opportunity
This is a matchup where the first 10 minutes could be extremely informative.
If New Orleans is moving the football effectively but comes away with only three points, a live Saints spread could become interesting if Detroit scores first.
But if Detroit’s defensive front is immediately overwhelming Shough, bettors should resist the temptation to blindly buy the bigger live number.
The game needs to show evidence that New Orleans can compete.
Best Bet
New Orleans Saints +7
Target: -115 or better
Potential $100 Profit: $86.96 at -115
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Risk: Moderate
Detroit is the more likely winner, but the Saints have enough offensive talent to make the full touchdown valuable.
Most importantly, the +7 gives bettors protection around one of the NFL’s most important scoring margins.
I would rather have Saints +7 than pay a worse price at +6.5.
If the market falls to +6, the value case becomes substantially weaker.

Market to Avoid
Lions Moneyline
The Lions are sitting around -310 to -335 across the current market.
That price correctly reflects Detroit’s status as the favorite, but it does not offer enough upside for the risk involved.
A bettor can be correct that Detroit wins and still make a poor wager by paying too much for that outcome.
Sports Betting Ace’s Final Score Prediction
Detroit Lions 27, New Orleans Saints 23
That projected score is important because it illustrates exactly why the +7 matters.
Detroit wins.
The Saints cover.
The strongest NFL betting opportunities are often found by separating who is likely to win from who is likely to cover.
Detroit is my projected winner.
New Orleans is my preferred side against the number.
