Detroit Has More Than a Home-Field Edge
The Lions and Jets both enter 1-1, but the circumstances surrounding those records are different.
Detroit opened the season with a 31-30 overtime win over New Orleans before losing 41-31 at Buffalo. New York defeated Tennessee in Week 1, then surrendered a 17-7 fourth-quarter lead against Green Bay before losing 20-17 in overtime.
The most important scheduling detail is easy to overlook: Detroit has had 10 days between games, while New York played its most recent game on September 20. That gives the Lions additional preparation time after their defensive problems showed up repeatedly against Buffalo.
That does not automatically make Detroit the right side, but it matters when evaluating a spread that has already dropped significantly.
The Market Has Repriced Detroit
Current markets generally show Lions -6.5, with prices around -110, while the total sits between 47.5 and 48 points. Moneyline prices vary from approximately Detroit -300 to -316 and New York +253 to +260.
The notable development is the spread movement.
NBC Sports reported that its DraftKings snapshot had Detroit opening around -9.5 before moving to -6.5. Another market report cited an initial FanDuel number of -7.5, illustrating why opening numbers can differ depending on sportsbook and timing.
The important point is not simply that Detroit’s number fell. It is that 6.5 now represents a much different price than the early market.
For a bettor considering Detroit, the question becomes whether the market has overcorrected for the Lions’ defensive performance.
The Offensive Matchup Favors Detroit
Jared Goff has been extremely efficient through two games, completing 52 of 77 passes for 533 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. Amon-Ra St. Brown already has 19 catches for 209 yards and four touchdowns, while Jahmyr Gibbs has produced 299 total yards.
New York’s defense presents a much more difficult test than Buffalo did in some areas. The Jets have allowed opponents to convert only 23.8% of third downs through two games, according to NBC Sports’ matchup analysis.
That makes third down one of the game’s central battles.
If Aaron Glenn’s defense consistently creates third-and-long situations, the Jets can make this uncomfortable for Detroit. But if Detroit’s offense stays ahead of the chains, its combination of Goff’s passing efficiency, St. Brown’s production and Gibbs’ versatility can put significant pressure on New York.
The Hidden Betting Edge: Rest
The strongest overlooked factor is preparation time.
Detroit played Buffalo on Thursday, September 17, and does not play again until Sunday, September 27. The Lions’ official schedule confirms that extended gap.
That gives Detroit additional time to address a defense that allowed 446 yards against Buffalo and failed to get off the field on nine of 12 third downs.
It also gives the coaching staff more time to deal with significant secondary concerns.
Avonte Maddox is out for the season, while Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph remained unavailable to practice this week.
That makes Detroit -6.5 less comfortable than it would be with a healthy secondary, but the extended preparation window is meaningful.
What Could Go Wrong?
The obvious concern is Detroit’s defense.
The Lions have allowed 71 points and 915 yards through two games, according to NBC Sports. New York also has enough talent to punish defensive mistakes, particularly through Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall.
The Jets have also covered both games so far, while Detroit is 0-2 against the spread.
That creates a legitimate case for New York +6.5.
There are also injury concerns for both teams. Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and tight end Mason Taylor are out, while Adonai Mitchell is questionable. Detroit has multiple offensive-line players listed as questionable.
Best Bet
Detroit Lions -6.5 (-110)
The market has already corrected heavily from the early Detroit price, but -6.5 still gives the Lions a manageable number at home with an extended preparation window. Goff’s early-season efficiency and the Detroit skill-position production provide the offensive foundation.
The biggest risk is the secondary. If Detroit cannot fix its third-down and coverage issues, New York has enough structure to stay inside the number.

Risk: Moderate
Why This Game Is Worth Watching
This matchup is less about simply picking a winner and more about identifying whether the market has fully accounted for Detroit’s defensive problems.
The Jets have earned respect. The Lions have legitimate weaknesses.
But -6.5 is a different proposition from the much higher numbers available earlier in the week, and Detroit’s extended preparation period gives the coaching staff an opportunity to respond.
Sports Betting Ace’s Final Score Prediction: Lions 27, Jets 20
Do you think Detroit’s defensive issues are already priced into the -6.5, or is New York still the better side?
