The Market Has a Problem at Seven
Seven is not just another number.
If Green Bay wins 27-20, a bettor holding Atlanta +7 gets a push. If the Packers win 24-17, the Atlanta ticket cashes.
That is important because Green Bay has yet to demonstrate the kind of offensive consistency that makes laying a full touchdown particularly comfortable.
The Packers needed overtime to beat the Jets 20-17 last Sunday. Jordan Love finished with only 145 passing yards, while Green Bay produced just 199 total yards. The Packers still found a way to win, but winning and covering a touchdown are two very different propositions.
And now Green Bay enters a short week with a significant injury list.
The Injury Angle Bettors Should Not Ignore
Green Bay’s first Week 3 report included multiple offensive-line concerns, while receiver Jayden Reed was also sidelined. Zach Bako-Bewele and Reed were among the players facing significant concern after Week 2.
That matters because the easiest way for Green Bay to justify a -7 spread would be to control the line of scrimmage and force Atlanta into obvious passing situations.
If the Packers cannot consistently create that advantage, the spread becomes much harder to justify.
Atlanta has its own problems, of course.
A.J. Terrell and Samson Ebukam were among the Falcons listed as non-participants in Monday’s estimated report. Michael Penix Jr., however, was listed as a full participant.
The Biggest Variable: Penix Is Back
Michael Penix Jr. has officially been named Atlanta’s starting quarterback.
This will be his first NFL start since suffering a season-ending ACL injury in November 2025. Penix has practiced for approximately three weeks, but Thursday will be his first real game environment since the injury.
That creates legitimate uncertainty.
It would be a mistake to assume Penix immediately plays at his previous level.
But it would also be a mistake to handicap Atlanta as though Cooper Rush or rookie Jack Strand were still starting.
Rush struggled through the opening two games, while Strand threw an interception returned for a touchdown during Atlanta’s 34-3 loss to Carolina.
The quarterback change alone doesn’t make Atlanta a good team.
It does make 0-2 a less useful shorthand for the current version of Atlanta.
The Hidden Betting Edge: The Packers Don’t Need to Lose
This is where casual bettors can get trapped.
Atlanta +7 does not require Atlanta to win.
It doesn’t even require Atlanta to play particularly well.
The Falcons simply need to avoid a game where Green Bay turns turnovers and short fields into a comfortable margin.
That distinction is critical when betting a large favorite.
The Packers are capable of winning 23-20 and frustrating Atlanta bettors all night.
They are also capable of winning 31-13.
The question is how much you’re paying to take on that range of outcomes.
What Green Bay Must Do to Cover
The Packers need more than Jordan Love simply avoiding mistakes.
They need explosive offensive production.
Green Bay’s Week 2 offense generated only 199 total yards, so expecting a dramatic improvement is reasonable, but it remains an expectation rather than something already proven through two games.
The return of home-field advantage should help.
The injury situation could work against it.
That tension is why the spread is much more interesting than the moneyline.
What Could Go Wrong With Atlanta +7?
The biggest concern is Penix.
There is no substitute for live NFL reps after an ACL injury.
If Green Bay pressures him early and forces Atlanta into third-and-long situations, the Falcons could quickly lose control of the game.
Turnovers are another major threat.
Atlanta committed five turnovers in its Week 2 loss to Carolina. Repeating that type of performance against Green Bay would make +7 extremely difficult to protect.
Best Bet
Falcons +7 (-110 or better)
This is a number-driven wager, not a declaration that Atlanta is the better team.
The return of Penix removes one of the biggest offensive questions Atlanta had entering the week, while Green Bay is dealing with its own short-week injury concerns.
Most importantly, +7 gives bettors protection against a one-score Green Bay victory.
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Risk: Moderate
If the market falls to +6 or lower, the calculation changes.
Best Betting Approach
This is a game where price shopping is part of the handicap.
If your sportsbook still has Atlanta +7, that number deserves attention. If another book has already moved to +6.5, don’t assume both tickets have the same value.
For bettors ready to place the wager, compare the available price through your preferred sportsbook before committing. That’s especially important around key NFL numbers.
Sports Betting Ace’s Final Score Projection
Packers 24, Falcons 20
The score projection does not require Atlanta to win outright. It reflects a matchup where Green Bay can control enough of the game to win while Atlanta’s quarterback upgrade gives the Falcons a realistic path to staying within the number.
Are you willing to lay a full touchdown with a Packers offense that has yet to produce a convincing four-quarter performance?
