This Saturday night, the San Francisco 49ers will go head-to-head with the Seattle Seahawks for the third time this season. Up to now, they’ve each taken one game, resulting in a 1-1 tie. The Niners pulled off a tough 17-13 win in Week 1, but just ten days ago, the Seahawks came out on top, defeating San Francisco 13-3 to grab the NFC West title and lock in the #1 seed.
The Seattle Juggernaut: A New Identity
In only two years, Mike Macdonald has done what a lot of people thought was impossible: he turned the Seahawks’ defense into the scariest squad in the NFL. They finished the 2025 season as the best team in points allowed, and it’s clear how they managed that.
The Darnold Factor: Who would have thought that Sam Darnold would be the one taking a 14-3 team into the playoffs? After landing a huge contract in free agency, Darnold has been playing incredibly well. He doesn’t need to be Patrick Mahomes; he just has to play like a point guard. With Jaxon Smith-Njigba (JSN) stepping up as a First-Team All-Pro with almost 1,800 yards this season, Darnold has the perfect safety net.
The Weapons: Acquiring Cooper Kupp in the offseason was the perfect all-in move. With Kupp’s amazing route running skills and JSN’s ability to make big plays, the Niners’ secondary is definitely going to be under pressure. Plus, with a backfield duo of Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet, who combined for over 1,700 rushing yards this season, you’ve got an offense that can either wear you down gradually or hit you hard with a knockout blow.
The San Francisco Gauntlet: Battered but Dangerous
The 49ers just pulled off a hard-fought, emotional 23-19 win over the Eagles in the Wild Card round. They’re definitely feeling the playoff pressure, but they’re also pretty exhausted. Kyle Shanahan’s top priority this week is to help everyone recover.
The Engine: Christian McCaffrey is still the most skilled player on any field he plays on. He took on a big role again this year, but during the Week 18 defeat against Seattle, he managed only 45 rushing yards. For the Niners to secure a win, CMC needs to be involved in the passing game to draw those tough Seattle linebackers out of the box.
Purdy’s Protection: Brock Purdy has faced a lot of criticism recently. In their last encounter, he was pressured on 42% of his drop backs. With Trent Williams dealing with an ongoing ankle problem, the clash between the Niners’ right side and Seattle’s Boye Mafe (who racked up 13.5 sacks this season) is the key matchup in this game. If Purdy can’t find the time to locate George Kittle or Deebo Samuel, this game will turn out just like the previous one.
The Matchup to Watch: Witherspoon vs. The World
Watch out for Seattle’s cornerback Devon Witherspoon. He’s the backbone of that defense. In the previous game, he excelled at neutralizing Brandon Aiyuk. If the Niners can’t find a way to use pre-snap motion to throw Witherspoon off his game with their key targets, Purdy will be forced to make some risky hero ball throws, and that’s when Seattle’s rookie safety Nick Emmanwori truly excels.
The 49ers have plenty of experience, but the Seahawks are healthy and have the home field advantage. Lumen Field in January is a challenging environment for any team that visits. The noise can create communication problems, and for a San Francisco team that struggles with penalties away from home, that’s a recipe for disaster.
I’m expecting a classic defensive showdown right from the start. Both teams know each other too well for any sneaky plays to work. But in the fourth quarter, watch out for the Seahawks’ depth to shine through. A tired 49ers defense will eventually buckle under the relentless running game of Walker and Charbonnet.
Sports Betting Ace’s Final Score Prediction: Seattle Seahawks 20, San Francisco 49ers 13
