The most important number in Commanders-Colts may not be the spread.
It may be 3.5.
Indianapolis enters Sunday’s London matchup as a short favorite, while Washington arrives with Marcus Mariota confirmed to take over for Jayden Daniels. The Commanders are coming off a 33-31 win over Seattle, while Indianapolis defeated Houston 19-17 last week. The current market is roughly Colts -3.5 with a total around 48.5, although prices vary across books.
That creates an interesting betting setup: Washington has the quarterback disadvantage on paper, but the matchup contains several reasons not to automatically treat Indianapolis as a comfortable favorite.

The Number Behind the Number
Washington’s biggest problem is obvious: Daniels is out.
The Commanders officially ruled him out because of his dislocated left elbow, leaving Mariota as the starter for a second straight game. Mariota threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns in the Seattle upset, but expecting another turnover-free, highly efficient performance would be aggressive.
The more interesting question is whether Indianapolis can create enough separation to make the quarterback difference matter.
Through three games, Washington’s defense has been poor against the pass, allowing 280.3 passing yards per game according to FanDuel Research. Indianapolis has its own defensive weakness: The Colts have allowed 276 passing yards per game.
That creates a matchup where neither secondary has consistently shut down opposing passing attacks.
Why Washington Can Stay Inside the Number
Washington’s ground game provides an important counterbalance.
The Commanders are averaging 132 rushing yards per game and have made substantial improvements defending the run, with one recent report placing their run defense third in the NFL at 82 yards allowed per game.
That matters because the Colts’ offense has not exactly been operating at maximum efficiency.
Daniel Jones struggled against Houston last week, taking four sacks and throwing an interception while failing to consistently generate explosive passing plays.
Washington does not need Mariota to dominate for the +3.5 to work.
It needs the Commanders to keep the game within one possession.
The London Factor
This is also not a normal road game.
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is scheduled to host the matchup at 9:30 a.m. Eastern, and the latest stadium forecast calls for partly cloudy conditions around 70 degrees with light winds. The Met Office forecast also indicates dry conditions around kickoff.
So there is little weather reason to downgrade either passing attack.
The unusual scheduling environment matters more than the forecast itself. Both teams have traveled internationally, and the game starts at a very different biological clock for the American players.
That makes a close-game handicap particularly appealing because a single early mistake can change the entire game script.
Hidden Betting Edge: Don’t Price the Backup Quarterback Twice
The market has already adjusted for Daniels being out.
That is the important distinction.
A bettor buying Washington at +3.5 should not pretend Mariota is equivalent to Daniels. He isn’t.
The question is whether the market has already charged Washington enough for the quarterback downgrade.
Indianapolis is laying more than a field goal. That gives Washington additional paths to cashing the spread: a late touchdown, a field goal, a one-score loss, or a game in which the Colts fail to convert enough opportunities against Washington’s improved run defense.
What Could Go Wrong
Washington’s offensive line remains a concern, and Mariota could face pressure if Indianapolis forces the Commanders into obvious passing situations.
There is also the possibility that Washington’s defensive struggles against the pass finally become too costly.
If Jones avoids mistakes and Indianapolis consistently finds explosive plays, the Colts could turn a close game into a two-score result.
That is why +3.5 is much more attractive than taking Washington’s moneyline.
Market to Avoid
The Colts moneyline is the market to treat cautiously.
Indianapolis may win, but laying a relatively expensive moneyline price removes much of the protection that comes with taking Washington +3.5.
The spread provides more room for the matchup to develop as expected.
Best Bet
Washington Commanders +3.5 (-105 or better)
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Risk: Moderate
The handicap is not based on assuming Mariota will repeat his Seattle performance. It is based on Washington’s ability to run the ball, its improved run defense, Indianapolis’ own defensive limitations and the value of having more than a field goal in what projects as a competitive game.
Sports Betting Ace’s Final Score Prediction: Colts 27, Commanders 24
That score loses the moneyline but cashes Washington +3.5.
Betting Discipline
The +3.5 is the key.
At +3.5, Washington has meaningful spread protection. At +3, the price becomes considerably less attractive. Bettors should compare numbers rather than blindly accepting the first available price.

Is Washington’s +3.5 enough protection with Mariota starting, or does Indianapolis have too many matchup advantages?
